Clean-up isn’t, well, always clean…

Our name might be Storage Deluxe but we know a thing or two about snow clean-up! Below is a snow removal guide that will have your car cleaned and ready to go in minimal time!

The night before a snow storm, back your car in to the driveway and park as close to the road as possible so you don’t have to shovel the entire driveway to get out.

Before starting to clean, remember: dress warmly. Be sure to wear gloves (as your hands will get incredibly cold, otherwise), and you won’t be able to keep clearing the car. Wear layers of clothes, as you might need to remove the snow jacket if the going gets too hot while clearing off deep snow. If the snow is above your winter boots, take a tall bag like a trash bag and put on before your boots. You can either tie the trash bag as high up as you need or use a rubber band to keep from slipping or letting snow in.

Your best tool when there is a lot of snow piled up on the car is a broom with feathered, soft bristle tips to do the main removal work. Don’t use a shovel or tough bristled broom as these will scratch the car. Once most snow is off, you can use another careful approach to removing the snow from the car: use an old towel and shake it out from time to time.

Start from the top of your car and work your way down. Brush the snow off the roof of your car onto the ground then, and then brush off the hood and back of the car. If your vehicle is higher than you, use a small step ladder and a broom to push off the snow. Use a scraper to clear the windshield, side windows, side mirrors, back window and any parts of the roof and hood that are not yet free of ice. Do not pour warm water on the windshield as this will cause the glass to crack!

Shovel the removed snow well away from the car and then start by digging around the wheels and the sides of the car, especially the driver’s door. Make sure to free up the wipers, if frozen. If they were running when you stopped the car, it may damage the wiper motor if you start the car and they are not free to move.

Once the car is snow free and it looks as though you are able to move the car freely, start the car. Turn on the heat and rear defroster. Wait about 10 minutes for the car to warm up.

Now, you’re good to go in minimal time!

The ‘How To’ on Holiday Clean Up

The parties have ended, the presents are opened, the relatives and friends have gone back home and there it all sits—the holiday decorations. Let this year inspire you to really organize. Make your holiday clean up fun with these tips from Storage Deluxe!

First things first, like most things; holiday decorations purchased years ago can start to look tired. This year, prioritize your decorations and let the old go. Just remember, your holiday trash could be someone else’s treasure!

We recommend buying storage bins—don’t limit yourself to the boring brown boxes or the plastic storage containers. Check out these creative and stylish containers from “The Container Store” online. They have a great assortment of small boxes for things such as ornaments and large boxes for your bigger decorations, with holiday inspired prints, keepsakes, and boxes for almost every shape and size. This will definitely be your one-stop shop for holiday storage. We love these boxes because you can find bins (already lined!) and box separators. If you’re more of a plain Jane, visit www.Storagedeluxe.com for your box needs. We offer simple, sturdy boxes that are guaranteed to last. You can line the bins with paper towel or tissue paper to keep decorations in place. It’s good to save the boxes your decorations originally came in but you can always use shoe boxes or purchased boxes in the larger storage bin for segregation.

The tree—it can look like a lot if you have a larger tree but it doesn’t have to be a long process. Start with the small ornaments and work your way to the larger. Have the small storage bins or small boxes labeled and match the tree decoration with its proper box (like this “Wing Lid Ornament box”) that can fit up to 75 ornaments. Have a smaller tree? We recommend a smaller box like the “Archival Ornament Storage Boxes” that can fit anywhere from 12 to 28 ornaments. Doing this offers more flexibility in arranging fragile or fluffy, to oversized and oddly shaped. After all ornaments have been removed, take down the garland and lights (tinsel first.)

For your lights and garland, first take a regular old shopping bag and place it over your arm. Then take one end of the lights and wrap them around your arm using the area between your pointer finger and thumb as leverage. Wrap down to the elbow and back up again, much like you would a spool. Be sure the lights are always around the bag. Spool the lights until you reach the end. Once finished spooling, carefully remove the bag from your arm, keeping the lights in a loop or a neat circle. Now take the excess center of bag and pull through the circle, much like a tissue out of a tissue box. Pull the two handles of the shopping bag across the sides of the lights and tie them together. The end result should be the lights in a circle. Much of the shopping bag should be in the middle of the lights so they won’t tangle, and there should be a tied bow on top to secure everything in place.

For your fragile fake furs, the container store offers, “Santa’s Bags Collection” with wreath bags, direct suspend and an upright tree storage bag. If you prefer a real tree, check out this tree skirt that doubles as a bag to help remove the tree after the holiday, “Christmas Tree Removal Bag & Skirt.”

Another tip for storing away decorations is packing up your decorations by room. This makes hanging them up easier next year. When packing away the dining room or kitchen, don’t be worried about your glassware, plates and dishes or even glass décor! We love these holiday inspired “Holiday Dinnerware Storage,” from the Container Store. Makes storing delicate items easier and safer than ever.

Packing up for the holidays will never be a short task but it doesn’t have to take you hours or even days. We hope our quick tips for storing helps this year and next!
