Storage Deluxe Tips for Packing Breakables
When moving and packing fragile items like plates, bowls, dishes, china, crystal, glassware, and many other precious breakables, they must be packed delicately or you will end up with a box full of shattered pieces! Storage Deluxe wants to help you pack these items the right way, so when you’re moving you can have peace of mind.
When packing fragile items, you first want to make sure the boxes you chose are as sturdy as possible. Most times glassware or dishes can be very heavy. Extras like; foam, cardboard separators, or Styrofoam pieces included in the boxes are helpful for protecting your breakables. You should place something to cushion plates when stacked in a box by separating each dish with a sheet of cushioning like felt or more cost effectively layering paper towel.
For packing fragile items like glassware, you should wrap them in cloth, a thick plastic or even something that can be zipped shut to ensure the glasses won’t roll around. You should try and stand your glassware up straight and then use cardboard in between each glass. Try to pack enough glasses in the box to avoid shifting or moving then you can ensure you won’t have breakage.
When packing breakables like valuable china, crystal and dishware, try to limit only 10 per box. Set up dividers and wrap each item individually. You want to only stack about 6 high at all times to make sure there isn’t too much pressure on the items in the bottom of your box. For your more fragile and valuable pieces make sure you wrap twice. Wrap the first time loosely with cushioning felt or linen and then another time in something like bubble wrap or foam. Wrapping too tightly can cause pressure. The best tip is to keep all boxes even and sturdy.
Always keep track of your fragile items by labeling. When you are unpacking later on you want to make sure you are aware of what you are unwrapping, so that you can be gentile with extra fragile items. Although these steps for packing fragile items may seem time consuming, it’s worth it! No one wants broken valuables!
