The Fine Art of Storage

A dusty attic/basement is no place to store your artwork. Valuable pieces of art should be treated with care and be stored under proper conditions. Our extraordinary art storage capabilities offer the perfect conditions for your artwork, and here are few reasons why…

  • Our staff and management are museum-trained professions.
  • Our building features oversized corridors, doorways, and other clearances to facilitate easy and safe access to large works of art.
  • Global Risk Partners, an independent risk management firm, awarded the controlled storage facility a top assessment for safety and security.
  • All climate controlled storage areas maintain consistent temperature and humidity.

Storage Deluxe sets the new standard of excellence, while embracing the fine art of storage. To learn more visit our website at http://www.sdfineartstorage.com/

It’s About That Time….

We hope you all enjoyed your holiday decorations this season, but face it: it’s time to take them down. Although it may sound like a good idea to just keep them up all year round, your neighbors may not feel the same way. Most would agree that by the first week in January, your decorations should be stored away. If you’re a little behind on your agenda, here are a few tips on how to organize and keep all your decorations safe until next year.

  • For outside decorations, be sure to wipe them down, so they are in tip-top condition when you pull them out next year.
  • When storing your lights, don’t put too many together, so they won’t get tangled in case the boxes get shaken up.
  • Never put fragile items on the top or bottom. Having a layer of items above and below allows for padding for your breakable pieces.
  • Use plastic bins that stack easily.
  • Label your boxes/bins clearly, so that you will know exactly what you’re looking at when you need them again.
  • To protect your wreaths from dust, keep them in a plastic garbage bag.
  • Keep in mind that storing you decorations with us is a great way to keep them safe and out of the way, until they are ready to be used again! Book a unit now: http://scheduler.storagedeluxe.com/

Don’t be “that” person, who still has their holiday lights up in February! If you’re having a hard time departing with your decorations, keep in mind that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. This means a whole new holiday you can decorate for!

Welcome in the New Year With a Clean Slate

Storage Deluxe wants to help you welcome in the New Year with a clean slate. When reflecting upon the previous year, many of us ask ourselves: “How did I get so disorganized?” It is easy to get wrapped up in our daily obligations to our family, friends and jobs. Getting organized is easily pushed to the back burner. Unfortunately, being disorganized can cause stress, and can steal both your time and money. During the hectic holiday season, the last thing you need is additional stress. That is why, throughout the month of December, we are providing you with tips on how to get (and stay) organized. Here are some things to keep in mind.

  • To maximize the usage of your storage space, keep the same sized boxes or items together.
  • Label your boxes or bins before you store them.
  • Make sure you are utilizing all your space – go vertical.
  • If your bulky winter clothes take up your entire closet, store your summer attire to create some extra room.
  • Use clear bins to store your things. Being able to see what’s in your bins is key to keeping everything organized.
  • Make sure you are leaving some space for accessing items at the back.
  • Since this is the season of giving, there is no better time to go through your homes – or storage units – and donate some of your things.

When you’re on the road to organization, and come across some coats you forgot you had, keep in mind we are participating in the New York Cares Coat Drive. We are helping NY Cares reach their goal of 100,000 coats this winter by setting up collection bins at our 10 locations in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens.

Spend your holiday season the right way – stress-free with your friends and family!

Hurricane Irene

If you are in, or around New York, or in a specific area along the east coast we have been warned of hurricane Irene. This hurricane is rapidly approaching and many warnings have been issued. For the safety of out Storage Deluxe community and anyone reading this, we have put together some crucial tips for safe guarding yourself, family and home from hurricane destruction.

  • Flashlights with extra batteries. Keep flashlights with extra, fresh batteries and keep them beside your bed and in several other locations. Candles are also a reliable source of light. Keep lighters and matches handy!
  • Portable radio with extra batteries. Most telephones will be out of order or limited to emergency use.
  • Make sure you have all necessary battery types for your radio, phone, flashlight etc.
  • First aid kit / first aid skills. Keep your first-aid kit well stocked and in a central location. Take basic first-aid and CPR courses. It is best to keep your skills current.
  • Fire extinguisher. Your fire extinguisher should be suitable for all types of fires and should be easily accessible. Teach all family members how to use it.
  • Food. Store a three-day supply of food for each person. Items such as canned or dehydrated food, powdered milk and canned juices can be rotated into your daily diet and replenished on a regular basis.
  • Have items such as a non-electric can opener, cooking utensils, paper/plastic plates and plastic utensils.
  • Water. Store a 3-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day). Store in air-tight containers and replace them every six months. Keep a disinfectant, such as iodine tablets or chlorine bleach, to purify water, if necessary.
  • Extra blankets and clothing may be required to keep warm. Sturdy shoes protect feet from broken glass and debris.
  • Alternate cooking source. Store barbecue, charcoal, starter and matches. If you have a gas stove burner your stove may still work in case of a power outage.
  • Tools. Have a crescent or pipe wrench to turn off gas and water if necessary and know the location of the shut-off valves.
  • Important documents should be stored in a waterproof container. Examples: insurance policies, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc. Also, checkbook, cash, credit cards, ATM cards.
  • Contact friends and family before and during the storm as much as possible. Try to be connected at all times. Let others know where you are, where you’re going and give updates on other family and friends.

When natural disasters occur, we not only have to be prepared to protect ourselves but we have to be prepared to come together and help out where needed. Join us in keeping this weekend as safe and secure as possible.

What is Disorganization Costing You?

We’ve all heard that it is bad to be disorganized, but do you actually know why? Have you ever calculated the price of disorganization? Some professionals estimate that the cost of disorganization may be as much as 20% of your household budget. Others have estimated the costs to be as much as $3,000 a year!

Disorganization is a drain on your wallet. You misplace your electric bill and don’t pay it until a week after the due date – 15% finance charge. You throw your mail in a pile unopened on the desk and a conference registration deadline passes you by – $40 late fee. Or, how many times have you brought something home and found one or two already in the cupboard? What about the food we throw out because we overlooked it in our refrigerators? Sometimes, disorganization forces us into crisis mode, leading to last-minute shopping at premium prices. It’s a pretty simple equation; the more disorganized you are, the more money you are likely losing.

Disorganization can also affect your schedule and everyday attitude. How often has the stress in your life been related to disorganization? Your mood is greatly affected by how smoothly your day goes. Have you ever had things spin out of control because you ran late, missed a deadline or spent 20 minutes searching for your car keys? How do you feel when you come across a document you should have acted upon months ago? Guilty? Remorseful? We beat ourselves up unnecessarily over being disorganized.

It’s time to get off the disorganization treadmill!

Once you realize how much disorganization is costing you, you have a reason to want to change. Keep the vision of a clutter-free and chaos-free life in front of you for motivation as you move forward with your organizing efforts. It’s never too late to stop being disorganized!
